Using Color: featuring Sarah Blakeman, Wolfgang Gehring, Anthony Ruscitto, and Mary Kay Weeks

November 5th to 27th 2021

Artist Reception: November 5th, 4:30 to 5:30pm

The R Gallery at Arlene’s is pleased to announce Using Color an exhibition featuring illustrations and paintings at 57 Fuller Rd. Artist Reception on November 5th, from 4:30 to 5:30pm, the exhibition showcases work by local artists Sarah Blakeman, Wolfgang Gehring, Anthony Ruscitto, and Mary Kay Weeks all created over the last couple years and use color as a driving factor in their work.

Color is the element of art that has the most direct impact on the viewer. It is visceral and its influence touches our very core. Using Color explores four artists' work and how they use color as a driving factor in their pieces. Like illustrator and artist Sarah Blakeman who is fond of line drawing and painting. Her work features rich saturated colors balanced with whimsical subject matter. She primarily works in watercolor, marker and pen.

The body of work from Wolfgang Gehring deals with the outside world, predominantly the sky and it’s cloudscapes. These images portray times of change such as sunrise and sunset. Working with multiple media; acrylics, oils, and oil sticks, scenes of intense and dramatic contrast and color are created. Previous work dealt with the figure as it relates to the natural world, in these works the figure is distinctly absent; in part due to the pandemic, to direct the focus to the color and form of the cloudscapes.

Anthony Ruscitto has always had a fascination with color, and how it is used. From conveying information, to invoking specific feelings, to building brand identity, color affects our lives every day. His work is his exploration of color. Paintings are very process based, and almost entirely intuitive. Ruscitto prefers to work with solid blocks of color and hard edges, which give the paintings a graphic quality.

MaryK Weeks combined use of color and spiritual nuances to reflect the influences of her travels, study of indigenous cultures and energetic healing practices.  She continues to capture the voices of characters such as Frida Kahlo in persona poems to accompany her visual work in acrylic, collage and encaustic.

Using Color will be on view at R Gallery at Arlene’s, 57 Fuller Rd Albany NY 12205, through Saturday, November 27, 2021.
