Arlene’s Artist Materials and the Atelier at Arlene’s today announced the 2022–23 participants in its Artist-in-Residence program, designed to foster individual artists while further enriching our creative community through exposure to their process and work. From October 2022 through August 2023, Maria DeAngelo and Ottavia Huang will receive institutional and material support from Arlene’s,—including studio space in the Atelier at Arlene’s Studio, Arlene’s art educational program located inside the store at 57 Fuller Rd Albany NY 12205. The work they make during their residencies will be shown in separate solo exhibitions at R Gallery at Arlene’s in fall 2023. Building on Arlene’s commitment to fostering community creativity, both artists will teach in the Atelier at Arlene’s, participate in the Makers Markets at Arlenes and give an Artist Talk about the body of work they are working on during their residencies. Andrew Ochal, Director of Programming and Chief Curator of the R Gallery at Arlene’s, said, “We’re thrilled to welcome Maria DeAngelo and Ottavia Huang to the Artist in Residence Program at Arlene’s. The best part of the program is that it functions like a laboratory for new projects, ideas and experimentation for new mediums. It's a safe supportive space for our AIR’s to learn and grow then share with our community. Both artists are creatively curious and I’m looking forward to seeing where that curiosity takes them in their residencies.” Maria DeAngelo is an artist and educator who has taught and created for the greater part of her life. She has a BFA from Alfred University NYS College of Ceramics at Alfred University and a MSEd from Potsdam College. Maria’s curiosity has led her to explore materials to create fanciful works. DeAngelo plans to use her residence to focus on acrylics, while encouraging others through painting and discovery of new techniques. Her personal painting goals include exploring acrylic techniques in abstraction and furthering her work with color. Ottavia Huang has always been passionate about arts for as long as she can remember. A fairly new transplant from Taiwan and Indonesia, Ottavia has a PhD in creative industries with five years of experience running her own art studio. Currently Ottavia runs her own art studio in Ballston Lake where she is working on a series of everyday watercolor and ink sketches to capture details of her surroundings and her travels. Her goal as an Artist in Residence is to learn new creative skills, to use different mediums to get creative in a different way. To connect and create with local art communities.

ABOUT ARLENE'S ARTIST MATERIALS

Arlene’s Artist Materials started out as a ceramic studio in 1960, originally located in a small 500 sq ft storefront on Madison Ave. Outgrowing that location, Arlene’s moved to its current location, at 57 Fuller Road, Albany, NY (with over 10,000 sq ft), in 1974 to create the art supply store you know and love.

Teachers, students, parents and hobbyists can always find what they need at Arlene’s. Come and browse the handmade art papers, unique journals and artsy novelties in the gift section of our store. Everyone can find something at Arlene’s. Arlene’s has items found nowhere else in the area. We have over 40,000 different products and will be happy to special order anything we don’t have in stock.

Whether you paint, draw, sculpt; are a professional, student or a beginner artist, you will find what you want at Arlene’s. We deeply discount all our paints, brushes, canvases, and easels every day. Many more in-store specials are going on constantly. Come in and check them out!. You’ll find unexpected treats you can transform into treasures. Everyone on staff at Arlene’s is also an artist, so we are able to answer any of your questions. If we don’t know we will try as hard as we can to get you the answer.

Arlene’s is great for framing. Our framing department has highly skilled framers that can help you frame the piece you love. Arlene’s can handle small projects, big projects and everything in between. There are over 1000 custom frame options to choose from with tons of ready-made frames and frame kits too. Just need glass or a mat cut? Arlene’s has you covered there too. Why go anywhere else?

As an independent art supply store, we feel a special connection to the arts community in the Capital Region. In 2015  Arlene’s started our educational program, the Atelier at Arlene's, to foster the creativity of our customers. To further that connection, the R Gallery at Arlene’s and Makers Markets at Arlene’s came about to showcase local talent and develop a thriving creative community.
